Ms. Harris' Overview of Hooray for Reading Day!

— feeling excited
Hooray for Reading Day! - Margery Cuyler, Arthur Howard

This is an outstanding book to read to your class on any given day. It is so important to understand that not everyone can get reading right off the bat, and IT IS OK! This book is about a young girl who struggles to read and is embarrassed to read in front of her class. She soon discovers with a little practice that reading isn't so bad. Allow your students to experience this book and go on a truthful journey of how practice makes perfect. Based on accelerated reader leveling system, this book is placed at a 2.4 (2nd grade, 4th month) reading level. A great activity for this book is to allow your students to do what the students in the book did. The students could act it out and participate so they know that reading can actually be really fun.

Ms. Harris' Overview of Pete the Cat (Rockin' in My School Shoes)

— feeling happy
Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes - Eric Litwin, James Dean

Pete the Cat, Rockin' in my School Shoes is on a rocking reading level on 2.2 (2nd grade, 2nd month) based on an accelerated reader leveling system! This is a wonderful book for students to predict and read along with the teacher. It would be a great book to read on the first day back to school to get the students excited and ready for the school year. A great activity to go with this book is to allow the children to write about what they are excited about for the school year. This will help students with independent thinking and allow students to get pumped for the year!

Ms. Harris' Overview on Charlotte's Web

— feeling angel
Charlotte's Web - E.B. White, Garth Williams, Rosemary Wells

Charolette's Web is a 4.4 (4th grade, 4th month) reading level based on an accelerated reader leveling system. I would recommend this book to 4th graders and up. This is a great book for any student and I would read this book as a whole group. To obtain prior knowledge, you could ask the students to recall of a time they had a pet. A great activity for this book is to write and/or talk about different perspectives. It is important for students to understand everyone's opinion and why each character may make the decision they make.

Ms. Harris' Overview on Bud, Not Buddy

— feeling confident
Bud, Not Buddy - Christopher Paul Curtis

Bud, Not Buddy is at a 5.0 (5th grade) reading level from accelerated reader leveling system. It is a great book and recommended for students who are in 5th grade or older. This book could be used to reach out for students who are in fosters home or have a broken family. A fun activity for students to engage theirselves in is to write predictions on the book or what would happen at the end of the book if Bud had not had made certain decisions.
